Learn Latifah’s bias tape machine appliqué technique to create modern designs based on Latifah’s patterns or a design all your own. You will learn how to attach bias tape to a background and create complicated looking designs with minimal piecing. Once you learn the technique, the design possibilities are endless!

The goal of improvisational patchwork is flexible patterning. Participants will start with a favorite fixed or “traditional” block pattern and gradually transform it through a series of repeti-tions and variations. Without the use of rulers, templates or instructions to guide them, they will gain a deeper sense of how patterns evolve, while learning ruler-free patchwork and composition techniques along the way. All skill levels. We will be in Parrish Hall. Set up Time begins at 9am. Workshop begins at 10am. Workshop wraps up at 4pm. Clean up ends at 4:30pm.

We cover the basics of traditional hand quilting, including equipment, materials, and practicing consistent stitch length. The workshop focuses more particularly on improvisational design principles applied to this decorative stitching layer. Good for both beginners and those looking to take their hand quilting to the next level! Chawne Kimber is an award winning textile artist who has exhibited quilts and embroidery in galleries and festivals in all over the United States. We use layouts of squares of varied sizes to explore small-scale machine piecing that preserves stamina while producing detailed work. Equipment, fabrics, basic color theory, and structural integrity are essential elements we emphasize. A full-day workshop can result in a completed mini quilt top.
