February 2016 Meeting Recap

More was more at the South Bay Area Modern Quilt Guild’s February meeting, and that is meant in the best way possible! We met on our usual Tuesday evening at the amazing Hart’s Fabrics in Santa Cruz (lucky us!) and we covered a huge range of topics.

President Chelsea asked us each to name one skill or technique that we want to improve on, and the answers covered the spectrum. The most common skill that the SBAMQG members want to learn is free-motion quilting. A few of us want to learn hand quilting and sashiko, paper piecing, English paper piecing, curved piecing, and reverse applique. We heard from people who want to learn binding, embroidery, time management skills, finding inspiration, and long arm quilting. One person’s dream came true because she wanted to learn how to sandwich and baste quilts and, lo and behold, on the agenda for the evening was a basting demonstration. How lucky is that?

So many options for basting quilts: Karen shows how to spray baste; Renee introduces Pinmoors; Pam uses safety pins or hand stitches; and Tami explains long-arm machine basting.

We have our work cut out for us with all these new skills we are going to be learning this year.

We got the latest info on upcoming quilt shows, including QuiltCon, which is just around the corner. Other updates included Fall retreat and workshops. SBAMQG Vice President, Pam Rocco, took signups for a workshop for her One Corner Log Cabin quilt, which is featured in the current issue of Quilter’s Newsletter magazine. The class filled in record time so maybe Pam will consider doing a second session.

With a little help from Madam President, Pam presents her One Corner Log Cabin.

After a break for outstanding refreshments featuring QUILTED CHEESE, we had what seemed like a record-breaking sew and tell session. Apparently, the winter rain has kept our quilters indoors and happily stitching because we really produced this month! Here is some of what we saw:

Pam, of course, was the winner of the night, with four quilt tops.

Last, but clearly not least, Therese showed her jelly roll race quilt top and Chelsea took our breath away with this chambray and Liberty combo top.

See you at QuiltCon!
