July Recap and August Reminders!

First I’d like to thank Anne for working so hard to get our website up and running once again, and looking better than ever. Thank you!

Can you believe it’s been nearly a month since our last meeting? Here’s a quick recap of our July meeting in case you missed it, and a few reminders for our August meeting, which is sure to be eventful!

Our new seating arrangement seemed to be a step in the right direction, as did our new design wall which came in especially handy when presenting our Quilt Con Block Challenge blocks.

If you were unable to include your block with the rest of the guild, you still have some time to submit a block on your own. The official challenge deadline is August 15, and more information is available on the Quilt Con website.

Another new format change is the Mapping Modern Monthly portion of our meetings. This fun, interactive aspect of our guild introduced by Karen will help us share all of the awesome modern quilting and fabric inspiration that we find on the web. If you find a great tutorial, bee, swap or idea online, bring a printout to share at the meeting, or post it to the SBAMQG Flickr group‘s Mapping Modern Monthly Discussion. Eventually all of the links presented at the meeting will end up on the discussion page for easy reference. There’s a few great links and resources already up there, so check it out and be inspired!

And of course there was lots of amazing Sew and Tell as always! Here’s just a very small highlight of what our guild had to show in July:

And then to finish things up, Anne and Gillian gave an amazing demonstration of their company, Play Crafts‘, new product, the Palette Builder!

The Palette Builder allows you to create color palettes for quilting from photos and images on your computer. Once you upload an image, the program generates a palette automatically, and you can control different variables (such as the color number and region of the photo you want to focus on) in order to create a completely custom color palette. And the best part is that it’s absolutely free and would love for people to play with it! You can even share your palettes on the Play Crafts Flickr group, and look at what others created!

And now for some reminders about the August meeting:

September marks our guild’s 1 year anniversary (yay!) and to celebrate SueDee’s is hosting an Anniversary Show featuring quilts made by our guild members!  We would love for every member to submit a piece, even if it’s a small item like a mug rug. This show is to celebrate our achievements as modern quilters. Keep in mind that each piece will be reviewed with the principles of modern quilting in mind so that the show reflects the modern quilting movement accurately. That being said, there will be plenty of room for our members’ creativity to shine in what is sure to be a gorgeous show! *Correction* Do not bring submissions to the August meeting. SueDee’s has notified us that they do not have adequate storage space for the entries that far ahead of time. We’ll keep you posted with the official submission date soon!

This month we will also be starting a pillow swap! In order to participate, bring a lunch bag or concealed quart sized zip-lock baggie with your name on it to the meeting. Make sure that your baggie is STUFFED with fun scraps! Participants names will be logged, and baggies will be randomly drawn and assigned to secret partners. Your mission is to create a pillow case to fit an 18″x18″ pillow case using primarily your secret partner’s scraps. Pillow cases are due at the October meeting (Oct. 2). You do not need to supply the pillow form for your partner.

There are still a few spaces in our Nov 2-4 sewing retreat that need to be filled. Please spread the word so that we can have a full, fun retreat! And if you’ve already signed up, the remaining balance is due Oct. 1st.

Also don’t forget about the upcoming Improvisational Confetti Quilt Class and our September Sew Day! The Confetti Quilt class by Peppermint Pinwheels is on Saturday Oct. 6th from 10:30-3:30 at SueDee’s. It’s $50 for guild members, and you can sign up by calling or stopping by SueDee’s. The Sew Day will be held in the Scotts Valley Library on Saturday Sept. 15 from 11-5. The cost is $15 for members.

See you Tuesday at SueDee’s!
